Description

Mother doesn't know where love has gone.
She says it must be youth that keeps us feeling strong.
See it in her face that's turned to ice,
And when she smiles she shows the lines of sacrifice.
And now I know what they're saying as our sun begins to fade,
And we made our love on wasteland and through the barricades.

Father made my history.
He fought for what he thought would set us somehow free.
They taught me what to say in school,
I learned it off by heart but now that's torn in two.
And now I know what they're saying in the music of the parade,
And we made our love on wasteland and through the barricades.

Born on different sides of life,
But we feel the same and feel all of this strife,
So come to me when I'm asleep and we'll cross the line and dance upon the streets.
And now I know what they're saying as the drums begin to fade,
And we made our love on wasteland and through the barricades.

Oh, turn around and I'll be there,
Well there's a scar right through my heart but I'll bare it again.
Oh, I thought we were the human race but we were just another borderline case,
And the stars reach down and tell us that there's always one escape.
Oh, I don't know where love has gone,
And in this troubled land desperation keeps us strong.
Friday's child is full of soul,
With nothing left to lose there's everything to go.
And now I know what they're saying,
It's a terrible beauty we've made,
So we make our love on wasteland and through the barricades.

I have had that idea for years. I think from the moment I saw the video of that song over the years and I had forgot how moving the lyrics were. How moving the story behind the song was. And from there on, until yesterday, I had made little sketches now and then how the image should look (like I always do.. draw some little sketches in classes or when idea pops into my head. Only few of the little sketches get into real manipulation) but that was all. I even looked sometimes for white ballerina stock (I have no idea but I was stock with having white ballerina in the middle of the pick) but never found exactly what I was looking.

And then, yesterday, I read about the contest and had totally other idea but went to browse Sitara-LeotaStock's gallery and when I saw that model.. I knew that was the one I was looking for. It was not ballerina on tutu but it was even more what I needed. That was white pure innocent. It had everything in the expression and body language I wanted to tell with the image.

The story is inspired by those lyrics and by events what inspired those songwriters to write that song, but I think the concept can be put into different time, different place and the message would always be the same. The story in the song is about two young people in Belfast turning the Troubles. I can only imagine how it most have been living back then: living in fear, being afraid, getting killed or shot or attack just because you are from wrong background or living in wrong place, having wrong religion, wrong dreams or wrong political views. Outside, every person looks similar. They are all humans, all living in same location but making difference between those similar people by things what are personal... and making that difference so important and so widespread that they go to different school, play different games.. like two different separated worlds in the same place and when those worlds collide, chaos and violence erupts. And in that kind of society, you were born in one side of life and you lived there. You did not go and made friends from other side. They might shot you for doing that too. They were chaotic times. They were mad times. But in that insanity, there were two people, whose heart were pure of that hate towards the other side thought to them from the early years of their lives and they could see further than what was told.. See further than things were. They were born on different sides of live and they know what they are risking but love overcomes all the borders, barricades and obstacles. They did not cared what their parents said. They did not cared what society said. They did not cared what people said was right or what was allowed. They made their own truth. They made their own destiny and conquered every barricade what life throw into their path. They saw more than past and hate coming from there. They knew that future is always in the hands of next generation and until the circle is broken, it will continue to be the things are. And they knew there can be future for them.. There can be future for every child as sometimes it needs new generation to overcome the conflict.

And so, no matter what others thought, their hearts were pure. They saw beyond principles of past and hate and they fought: for their love. For their future.

So, I tried to use many symbols on the work. The night.. that kind of cold and blue feeling, like the cold is getting to your bones, giving you shivers to remind the horror of any conflict. And that rain: to symbolize sorrow or maybe washing off the past. And those buildings. They were great fun to work with: I mean. To have all those graffitis and writings on them. I started to call those buildings my "anti-war" buildings as they are full of messages to stop the conflicts, stop the killings and stop the war. No matter what the differences are, they can be solved by talking. And the sign "Hope st". What a found! It was perfect for my symbolism and story telling.

And of course the bared wire and the the barricade: to have the separation of worlds literally on the image and also use it to separate more than just two sides of the conflict: she is on the calm side of the barricade: that's her world. There's the rain.. there are the colorful leaves (only colorful thing on the image).. it's like crossing the barricade and stepping to calm, beautiful, serene world.. there is nothing to harm here there.. there is hope and there is peace there.. and what goes on behind the barricade does not matter. That's the world she sneaks every night in her dreams.. That's the world she hopes to live one day. And she.. that pure white, almost like glowing even thought there is no more light sources than the street lights.. but what if, she is a light source herself? What if she is the creature of light and hope, walking in purifying rain in that Hope street towards better future as she can see world beyond the fighting and conflict not like those people on the background? I like to think that's the story.. That's she, seeing more as her heart open the door for herself when she fell in love for the man from the other side. Maybe we all should fell in love with someone from the other side, what ever our conflict or barricades would be? Maybe then we all could see that maybe our right is not totally right and that their right may not totally be wrong and the real truth lies somewhere in the middle. Maybe then we start to think more about finding compromises and other means of solving our disputes than taking up guns and violence.

I can only hope we all find our Hope street and we find the courage it needs to walk towards new dawn, leaving violence and hatred behind. History is full of brave people who have made that brave choice...
